Simplify Your Estate Planning
As an estate planning attorney I want to help you create a plan that offers true peace of mind. Whether you're just beginning to think about your estate plan, or you already have documents in place that need reviewing, I'm here to guide you through the process with compassion and expertise.
The Estate Planning Process: Step by Step
Creating your personalized estate plan is a straightforward process when you have the right guidance. Here's how we'll work together:
Step 1: Initial Consultation
We'll begin with a comprehensive conversation about your family situation, financial assets, and personal goals. This crucial first meeting helps me understand what matters most to you and identify potential challenges specific to your circumstances. We’ll discuss a plan design and recommendation. Every estate plan includes six essential documents:
Durable General Power of Attorney
Health Care Power of Attorney
Mental Health Advance Directive
Health Care Directive
HIPAA Form
We'll also discuss whether specialized tools like trusts would benefit your situation.
Step 2: Drafting & Review
Your legal documents will be drafted with precise language that reflects your wishes, and sent to you for review. We will make any necessary adjustments and fill in any final decisions you are still making.
Step 3: Signing & Implementation
You'll return to formally sign your documents in accordance with Washington state law. I'll guide you through proper execution, including witness and notary requirements, to ensure everything is legally binding.
For many estate plans (especially those involving trusts), we'll work together to properly align your assets with your new plan. This might include retitling accounts, updating beneficiary designations, or transferring assets into a trust.
Regular Review & Updates
Estate planning isn't a one-time event. You should review your plan every 3-5 years or whenever you experience significant life changes like marriage, divorce, births, deaths, or substantial changes in assets.
Why This Matters More Than You Might Think
Estate planning isn't just about creating documents – it's about creating outcomes. According to the American Bar Association, approximately 55% of Americans don't have even basic estate planning documents in place. Without proper planning, families often face unnecessary court proceedings, tax consequences, and potential conflicts.
A well-crafted plan ensures your wishes are honored and your loved ones are protected during life's most challenging moments. It provides clarity during uncertain times and prevents unnecessary stress, conflict, and expense for your family.
Taking the First Step
Estate planning is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and your loved ones. While it may seem overwhelming at first, having a trusted guide makes all the difference.
Estate planning is a collaborative process, and your input is essential to creating a plan that truly works for you. I'm here to guide you through each step with clarity and compassion.
